ADHD stands for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and its relatively sudden presence as an epidemic has many people questioning where exactly it came from.
A whopping 19% of Americans have become diagnosed with ADHD.
In France on the other hand, its only 5%. Explaining the ADHD phenomena should probably start with looking at these differences.
It seems that ADHD was never that prevalent in decades past. Some would say that it was present, but it wasnt called ADHD, it was simply called boredom. Did we talk a common human quality and suddenly push it into the behavioral disorder category? Many believe that to be a possibility.
Some, like Dr. Edward C. Hamlyn of the Royal College of General Practitioners, even goes so far as to state: ADHD is fraud intended to justify starting children on a life of drug addiction.
Even one of the so-called founding fathers of labeling ADHD as some sort of psychiatric disorder, Leon Eisenberg came forward before he died and stated that: ADHD is a prime example of a fictitious disease.
Going back to the French connection, the main difference to look at is culture. Food consumption in France is not dominated by fast foods, processed foods, and chemically laden filled foods, which is essentially the staple of the U.S. diet whether you are an adult or a child.
Specifically for the French kids, they are actually fed food in school that is prepared by real chefs-in-training who use natural ingredients which come from local produce and livestock.
Compare that with the sugar heavy, high fructose corn syrup everything, the caffeine laced stimulants and the GMO foods as the norm, and you begin to wonder if feeding this stuff to our children perhaps may cause of bit of irritability and lack of focus. You think?
Couple that with the new technologies of today where things move so fast with instant messaging, texting, and immediate answers provided by Google. In this hyper fast pace environment does one really expect a child to sit still for hours on end inside a classroom listening to boring lectures based on an outdated style of teaching? Of course not.
There are two opposing forces at play here. One expects a child to keep up with the fast paced, current day environment, and the other expects him to sit down, be still, and learn at a very slow pace.
Meanwhile we of course have big pharma who wants to make money peddling cures for these common sense problems.
France doesnt treat ADHD with big pharma solutions, rather it employs socialization skills and talk therapies. In the U.S. psychiatrists tend to bypass talk therapy and instead focus on prescription pad therapy as they write out pharmaceutical solutions in a matter of minutes, instead of investing a few hours of actual therapy.
So now we have bored, uninterested kids being pumped up with stimulants like ritalin, just because they are naturally bored and disinterested in a culture that continues to force feed them garbage food and expects them to sit still in a room for hours on end just because they are nostalgic for a school system model which is no longer relevant to our current day way of living.
