Putin Promises Serious Consequences After Turkey Shoots Down Russian Jet

Vladimir Putin has said that there will be serious consequences, after the Turkish airforce shot down a Russian jet earlier today.

The Russian President has reportedly been insisting that the Su-24 plane was inside Syrian borders when the attack happened, a statement that contradicts claims by the Turkish forces that it had gone into Turkey and had been repeatedly warned about violating their airspace.

In a press conference, Putin labelled it a stab in the back by accomplices of terrorism, insisting that plane had been 1km inside of Syria when the attack took place.

Our pilots and our plane never threatened Turkey in any way – this was an obvious fact. They were conducting an operation to fight Isis.

Today’s tragic event will have serious consequences for Russian-Turkish relations. We have always treated Turkey not only as a close neighbour but as a friendly state.”

This is the first time a Russian or Soviet military aircraft has been publicly acknowledged to have shot been shot down by a NATO member since the 1950s.

Turkey immediately called a meeting with NATO for later today, a move which Putin says was as if Russia just downed a Turkish jet.

A Turkish official told Reuters that “the data we have is very clear. There were two planes approaching our border, we warned them as they were getting too close. We warned them to avoid entering Turkish air space before they did, and we warned them many times. Our findings show clearly that Turkish air space was violated multiple times and they violated it knowingly.”

A little while after the plane was brought down, footage was posted online by a rebel group claiming to show the dead body of one of the pilots. The grouphave reportedly said they would consider exchanging the Russian pilot’s body for prisoners currently being held by the Syrian government.
