Mitski has been making music since 2012. Her newest album, Puberty 2, came out in June 2016 and got a lot of praise from critics, including the folks at Pitchfork, which gave it Best New Music status. In this episode, Mitski breaks down her song “Your Best American Girl” with her long-time collaborator Patrick Hyland. “I was in love with somebody, but I just felt like our backgrounds or the places we come from or how we were raised were so completely different,” says Mitski. “And it felt like something that couldn’t be overcome by love.” She also discusses her family history, alternate guitar tunings, and how she starts with lyrics and vocal melody because she doesn’t work in a band.
