To Attract Customers, Chinese Restaurants Were Adding More Than MSG To Their Food

Nowadays, it seems restaurant owners and chefs will do just about anything to distinguish themselves from the establishment next door.

And while that might normally mean offering a free drink if you check in on Foursquare, in China, it’s a bit more extreme than that…

Recently, 35 popular Chinese restaurants were shut down for adding ground poppy powder to their dishes. While that might not sound like a big deal, what you don’t realize is that the powder is highly addictive and is used in the creation of opium, morphine, heroin, and codeine.

The poppy powder they were using is extremely hard to detect when cooked correctly, which is why the restaurants had been getting away with it for so long.

Well, that’s one way to get people to keep coming back to your restaurant. Another way? COOK GOOD FOOD! Novel idea, I know.
